Panda (February 2011): the quality revolution

Mobile-friendly (“Mobilegeddon”, April 2015) and Mobile-First Indexing

The Page Experience update, rolled out across 2021 (mobile in June, desktop in February 2022), made user experience signals an explicit ranking factor. Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — became algorithmically measurable inputs. Sites with poor field metrics in the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) saw rankings degrade against faster, less janky competitors.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) officially replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. March 2024 Core Update: the largest in years

The March 2024 Core Update was the largest core update in years and ran for 45 days. Google explicitly stated that the goal was to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 40 percent. It also introduced new spam policies targeting scaled content abuse (mass-produced AI content with low value), site reputation abuse (third-party low-quality content hosted on high-authority domains for ranking purposes), and expired domain abuse (acquiring expired domains and repurposing them with low-value content). Sites violating these policies faced manual actions and algorithmic suppression.

The March 2024 update was also significant because it integrated Helpful Content into the core system and signalled that Google would treat scaled, low-effort content as spam regardless of whether the production was AI-driven or human-driven. The era when “publish 500 articles a month” could be a viable strategy ended — except for sites that maintained editorial oversight, demonstrable expertise, and genuine value per piece.

AI Overviews and the SERP feature explosion (2024-2025)

AI Overviews (originally announced as Search Generative Experience and rolled out broadly to US users in May 2024 and to additional markets through 2024 and 2025) changed the SERP layout for many informational queries. AI-generated summaries now appear above traditional organic results for queries Google deems suitable, often citing multiple sources but reducing click-through to those sources.
